Students

Why should I consider co-oping or interning?

  • You'll gain great work experience
  • You'll earn money during your work semesters as an intern or co-op
  • You'll confirm choice of major
  • You'll understand the professional workplace
  • You'll improve after-graduation job prospects (many co-ops receive job offers upon graduation)
  • You'll network with professionals
  • You'll receive progressive in-depth experience with each semester of work
  • You'll receive a co-op designation on diploma or an internship designation on transcript (or both!)

Undergraduate Co-op:

  • Alternate semesters of classes and paid, full-time work
  • Once you start working, the alternation schedule is mandatory
  • Grow with same employer for 3+ work terms
  • Earn “Cooperative Plan” seal on diploma
  • Over 25% of undergraduates participate on the Atlanta Campus
  • At least three work terms are required (two must be in fall & spring)
  • Students enroll in free audit course to maintain full-time status while working
  • (maintain health benefits, etc.)
  • Work experience appears on transcript
  • No tuition
  • Will be required to submit reports documenting activities during work periods
  • Financial Aid (HOPE, etc) should not be affected

For more information, visit the Undergraduate Co-op Program page

What should transfer students know about co-op?

  • Baseline requirements to be admitted to program:
    • Georgia Tech Savannah student
    • Must have taken a full course load in the term immediately prior to working
      • Exception - Summer
      • Since transfer student, prior term could be completed at previous institution
    • Must have at least three school semesters left after completing first work term
      • This may be adjusted if you enter the GT Co-op program with previous co-op experience.
  • If you participated in Co-op before transferring, you can receive one term of work credit

Internships

  • You must complete one semester as a full-time Georgia Tech student with a minimum 2.0 GPA before you can participate in an internship
  • Internships should be related to your major or community service-related
  • Internship can be in the Summer, fall or spring
  • It can be part-time (20+ hrs/wk) or full-time
  • You can work multiple internships with varying employers
  • You will receive a notation on your transcript (if registered through the internship program)
  • Baseline requirements to be admitted to program:
    2.0 GPA
No failing grades in semester immediately preceding internship.

For more information, visit the Internships section on the Atlanta site.

Work Abroad

  • Work full-time as an intern or co-op internationally
  • Can study abroad and then work abroad
  • Summer, fall, or spring; most participants are typically juniors or seniors but you can work abroad as a freshman
  • Acceptance into Co-op or Internship program
  • Language proficiency recommended but not absolutely required
  • Chances for placement drastically increases when you have language proficiency
  • You will have to demonstrate competency
  • Jobs are competitive; many require previous experience
  • Will have to be approved to apply for jobs
  • May be additional requirements
