Julie Sonnenberg-Klein manages the Math, Science and Technology Education Initiatives (MaST), which is the K12 community outreach arm of Georgia Tech Savannah. Through summer camps, workshops, science fairs and career exploration programs, Georgia Tech Savannah served 2200 students, teachers, parents and community members in the 2010-2011 academic year, and over 200 students in the summer of 2011.
She is responsible for organizing the following programs:
- LEGO robotics including LEGO League, workshops for groups and schools, and badges for scouts
- Regional Vex Robotics competition, primarily serving high school teams
- 2-D computer animation for students in grades 4-12 using Scratch
- 3-D computer animation for students in grades 6-12 using Alice
- Introductions to engineering for career days and career fairs
- Teacher workshops for LEGO robotics and Scratch computer animation
- Georgia Tech Savannah Regional Science and Engineering Fair
- Creative Technology Summer Camps for grades 4-12
Julie has worked in higher education for thirteen years, with an emphasis on outreach and community engagement. Before joining GTS, Julie worked for physics departments at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is interested in the accessible communication of complex ideas, in involving college students in community outreach, in collaborating with community initiatives, and in supporting schools and groups in the development of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) initiatives. Julie is currently working toward her Masters degree in Educational and Organizational Leadership.
