LEGO robots and the LEGO Mindstorms software are available commercially through stores like Toys R Us and Amazon, as well as LEGO Education. LEGO robots are the centerpiece of the FIRST LEGO League, which is open to students in grades 4-8. The robots are also used in college classrooms, to teach basic design and programming concepts.
Students write programs (a series of instructions) for the robots on computers with simple drag and drop programming blocks (like move, stop, play sound, etc.). Students transfer the programs to the robots with a USB cable. Just as an iPod can hold multiple songs, each robot can hold multiple programs. This means that students can share robots, but still write, save and run their own programs.
LEGO workshops are fun and appropriate for students in grades 4 through college, but it is most popular for grades 4-8.
