Research at Georgia Tech Savannah

Faculty and students at Georgia Tech Savannah collaborate on a wide variety of research projects, many with a global as well as a local applications. The Southeast region of Georgia is economically and ecologically varied, and provides a wealth of opportunities for research into coastal systems, marine structures, risk mitigation for tsunamis and hurricanes, and water quality engineering. Of particular concern is the security and infrastructure of the world’s port systems, and GTS researchers are frequent collaborators with both the on-site Maritime Logistics Innovation Center and the Georgia Ports Authority.

Researchers are also involved in exploring alternative energy sources, such as offshore wind farms and offshore turbines to harnesss tidal energy. Structural engineering and materials research is being applied to the restoration and preservation of Savannah’s historic district, as well as redefining the ways to strengthen and reinforce new construction and military structures.

Local industry leaders like Gulfstream Aerospace and JCB (one of the world’s largest construction equipment groups) provide students with extraordinary co-op and internship opportunities, as well as collaborative research opportunities in system design and simulation, ergonomics, and industrial ecology. Research into ubiquitous education and distance learning technologies—including networks, 3D graphics and speech processing—will have an impact on generations of students, and can also find applications in multimedia development, disaster reconnaissance, telecommunications and medicine.
